Elena Zuglian

Assistant Coach

Originally from Italy, I began swimming at a young age and competed in synchronized swimming for over a decade at the national level, serving as team captain. I started coaching as a teenager and became a certified instructor, leading athletes of various ages and levels.

My approach to coaching is holistic, emphasizing strong technical foundations, discipline, body awareness, and efficiency, while also focusing on nutrition, injury prevention, recovery, and mental well-being. I strive to create a positive and supportive environment where swimmers can grow with confidence, enjoy the process, and reach their full potential both in and out of the water.

Head Coach, Kalaheo High School Swim Team

Founder/Head Coach, Michelle Simmons Coaching

Competitive History: Ironman Triathlete and ocean swimmer

Originally from Ohio, I grew up swimming and diving before earning an athletic scholarship to the University of Hawaiʻi, where I became the Big West Champion in 1 meter diving. I later graduated Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University with a BAE in Education and spent five years as a classroom teacher before starting my own Endurance Sport Coaching business in 2008. My coaching career has spanned all ages and abilities, from teaching kids the fundamentals to guiding adults training for Ironman triathlons and ocean channel swims. Having called Hawaii home for more than 20 years, I am honored to now serve Oahu’s military families as Head Coach of the Hickam Hurricanes.

My Coaching Philosophy

I believe that being on a swim team is about more than achieving fast times. Swim training builds confidence, resilience, discipline, responsibility, and perseverance—qualities that help young people succeed both in and out of the pool. And, swimming should be fun! (Swimming fast is fun!)

Whether a swimmer is learning their first legal stroke or chasing championship qualifying times, I aim to create an environment where swimmers are happy, healthy and excited to race.
