Step 1 is the Family Acknowledgments form (about 8 minutes). Steps 2–5 are below.

About the Team

We're a Parent-Led Private Organization on Camp Smith, year-round through USA Swimming. Our kids succeed with the help of our parent volunteers. Every swimmer needs an active USA Swimming registration and team registration.

Practice schedule & monthly fees

GroupDaysTimeMonthly
NoviceMon–Fri3:30 – 4:30 PM$95
Age GroupMon–Fri4:30 – 5:30 PM$95
Juniors & SeniorsMon–Fri5:00 – 7:00 PM$110

Plus: $100 one-time team registration fee · $25 annual equipment fee per swimmer (billed each September 1).

Don't start the steps below until you're sure you're joining. Team registration fees and USA Swimming fees are non-refundable once paid.

Why SafeSport Matters

Our team is SafeSport Certified — we go above and beyond to create a safe, positive environment for every swimmer. The training takes a little extra effort from each family, but it protects our kids first, and our coaches, volunteers, and everyone else second. It's how we build a team culture where every keiki can thrive.

When you PCS to your next duty station, we encourage you to look for another SafeSport-certified team — it makes a real difference. Please don't skip Step 4 below.

5 Steps to Get on Deck

Step 1 is the Family Acknowledgments form — click the button above to start. After you submit it, you'll get a confirmation email with the Camp Smith Waiver, MAAPP, Volunteer Policy, and a Signed Acknowledgments PDF attached. Then complete Steps 2–5 in any order.

Step 1 — Family Acknowledgments form

Read and acknowledge the Hickam Hurricanes Membership Agreement, Parent Code of Conduct, Athlete Code of Conduct, Photo Release, MAAPP, and Volunteer Policy. About 8 minutes.

Step 2 — Team registration on Commit ($100)

Register your swimmer(s) on Commit Swimming and pay the one-time $100 team registration fee. This is where Commit collects your address, swimmer info, emergency contacts, and payment.

Open Commit registration →

Step 3 — USA Swimming registration

USA Swimming membership is required for every swimmer — both to compete in meets and to cover our team's insurance. Most swimmers register as Premium Athletes.

How to register (new swimmers):

  1. Open the USA Swimming portal.
  2. Create your parent account first (free), using your own email.
  3. Once your parent account exists, click "Add Athlete" or "Register a Member."
  4. For Hickam Hurricanes: LSC: Hawaii Swimming (HI) · Club: Hickam Hurricanes (HICK).
  5. Use your child's legal name as on their birth certificate.
  6. Pick Premium Athlete. Finish checkout.

⚠️ Parents and swimmers need separate accounts. Don't use your own email for the child's account — the system will complain.

💡 If anything goes wrong with linking the child and parent accounts, USA Swimming Help is fast and kind. Just go to Help on the menu and submit a help ticket.

A) Swimmers who completed our Pre-Comp classes: Your swimmer may already have a Flex Athlete membership through us. They can keep that Flex membership, but Flex athletes are limited to 2 swim meets per swim year (block parties don't count). After 2 meets, they'll need to upgrade to Premium.

B) Swimmers transferring from another USA Swimming club: Don't create a new account. Log into your existing USA Swimming account, go to your swimmer's profile, and select "Initiate Transfer to Swim Club" using LSC: HI, Club Code: HICK.

No upload needed — Commit links to your USA Swimming membership automatically after Step 2 is complete.

Step 4 — SafeSport training (parent + each swimmer)

⏱ This is the longest step on the list — but the most important. Please don't skip it.

Required for both the parent AND each swimmer. Email completion certificates back to the registrar when done.

For SWIMMERS — log in AS THE ATHLETE (not as the parent):

  • Ages 5–12: "Safe Sport for Kids"
  • Ages 13–17: "Safe Sport for Youth"

Look for this course tile when logged in as the athlete:

Safe Sport for Kids course tile

For PARENTS — log in as the ADULT:

  • "Parents Guide to Misconduct in Sport" — Education section of your USA Swimming parent account.

Parent course tile:

Common issues & fixes:

  • "It won't let me take the kids course" → you're logged in as the parent. Log in as the athlete. The age error looks like this:
Age error — User exceeds the maximum age allowed to access this course
  • "I don't see my swimmer" → accounts aren't linked yet. Parent dashboard → "My Family" → click View next to your child → "Create a Login Account."
When linking works, your "My Family" view should look like this:
My Family view in USA Swimming with linked swimmers
  • "Do I have to pay for the parent account?" → No. Parent accounts are free.

Alternative — direct training: if you don't want to set up a child email, take both courses at safesporttrained.org and send a screenshot of the certificate.

Step 5 — Sign & email back the Camp Smith Liability Waiver

The waiver is attached to your confirmation email. Print it, sign it, scan or photograph it, and email it back to registrar@hickamhurricanes.com along with your SafeSport certificates from Step 4. Camp Smith requires a real signature — we can't accept an electronic one for this document.

Don't have the email yet? Download the waiver directly.

Send Your Completed Documents

Once Steps 4 and 5 are done, email the registrar with these attached:

  • Signed Camp Smith Liability Waiver
  • SafeSport completion certificate — parent
  • SafeSport completion certificate(s) — each swimmer

Email your documents →

Schedule Your First Practice 🌊

Once the registrar confirms your file is complete, pick a first practice day:

Your swimmer will receive their two Hickam Hurricane swim caps on day one.

Equipment & Gear

Required for all swim levels: goggles, fins (short fins), kickboard, pull buoy.
Additional for Juniors & Seniors: swim paddles.

We have a small loaner stash on deck, but every swimmer needs their own gear within 2 weeks of starting.

🛒 Swimoutlet — Hickam affiliate link (the team earns store credit on every purchase).

🏊 Agon Swim — team competition suits. Check with the head coach on sizing before purchasing.

Volunteer Requirements

We're a parent-led club — the team only runs because families volunteer.

  • 4 volunteer sessions per swim year (Sept 1 – Aug 31) per swimmer
  • Multi-swimmer families: requirement reduced by 1 session per additional swimmer; max 10 sessions/year.
  • Mid-year starts: prorated by quarter.
  • At a meet, 1 session = 1 full shift (typically 3–5 hours).
  • Off-meet tasks use a point system (1 pt per task; 4 pts = 1 session; 16 pts = full year).
  • Full-session roles: team photographer, committee chair, fundraiser event lead.

Full policy: read the Volunteer Policy.
